For my Shakespeare selections, try either "-- From Plays," or "--Sonnets" in the pull down menu or click on the links here.
I've included some of my favorite sonnets by William Shakespeare, as well as some of my favorite speeches from his plays. I know it's sometimes considered an "elitist" thing to like Shakespeare and many people say his work is just too hard to understand. I disagree and feel if that were true, then the Romeo and Juliet move from the 1990s (the one with Leonardo DiCaprio) would not have been noticed. I've talked with teens (and adults) who saw it and realized they not only liked it, but could understand Shakespeare. (A year ago I was in a video rental store and was talking with the clerk. I told him I liked Shakespeare, but had trouble getting into the updated settings. He said, "Shakespeare is good, but if they need to update the language. People can't understand it anymore." I bit my tongue and just left. I've taught students of all ability levels. I have yet to find a student who could not understand and even enjoy Shakespeare's plays.)
I taught in a psych hospital for a while. After the first time I taught Hamlet, I had students begging me to do more Shakespeare plays. The characters are real and the language is actually fun. Sometimes students would complain at first, but I've always found they changed their minds after a class. Maybe it does take a few minutes to get used to the language, but after that, it is fun and colorful.
I am not an expert on Shakespeare. I do not study his works to be a scholar. I read what I can and what I want to when I can. For me, it is something that I do for enjoyment. My hope is that I have been able to pass that gift of enjoyment on to my students. I don't know if any of them ever read any Shakspeare plays or see any of the movie adaptations, but I know they enjoyed it in my classes. (They told me so, over and over.)
Update Shakespeare's language? Faaaggghhh!
So here's some more poetry. I hope you find it enjoyable.
